My teaching experience began while I attended Auburn University @ Montgomery. I knew I needed a job, so I quickly took one in the school cafeteria. While I was attending one of my math classes, the professor asked if I would be interested in working in the tutoring center on campus. Of course I accepted, and enjoyed helping other students with their math work.
I also was able to work as an adjunct teacher at the community college for one quarter teaching a developmental math class and loved it.
During my last quarter of college, I was able to do my student teaching at T.R. Miller High School under Mrs. Elaine King. Until this day, I use several of her methods of teaching in my own classroom.
Once I graduated in June of 1998, I immediately applied for any teaching positions in our county. I fondly remember when the principal of W. S. Neal High School, Mr. Philip Ellis, called and asked if I would like to come in for an interview. I was a little hesitate, because an opening was coming up at the school where I did my student teaching. But I definitey agreed and was happy I did. After only a few days, I was offered the job. This is still June right after I graduated college, just a little overwhemling to be offered a job on my first interview! Not to mention, I just got married on June 20, 1998 as well. Mr. Ellis said give myself some time to think about it and call him back in about a week. I gladly accepted and was so glad I did. I worked as a high school math teacher at W.S. Neal High from August 1998 through June 2010. Mr. Ellis passed away from cancer in that same month. My world was broken. I had accepted another job opening for a math teacher here at Pollard McCall Junior High School right before he passed.
Mr. Hugh White, principal here at Pollard McCall Junior High School, had called me to see if I would be interested in teaching math and science at his school. I felt I needed a change and gladly accepted. I have been teaching math and some science classes from August 2010 until now 2020. Mr. White passed away at the end of my fifth year teaching here at McCall. It was at the end of school in May 2015. My world was really turned upside down. We were so lost without Mr. White. But life continued on and we were able to enjoy a new principal, Mr. Buddy Powell to begin that next school year. He has helped guide us all through that difficult time and he is still our principal today. Thank you Mr. Powell for stepping up to the challenge.
Moving from the high school to the middle school took some adjusting, but I have enjoyed it so much. I love teaching math and love watching students learn and understand the math skills I am teaching. I have been so blessed to be able to work with so many students through the years. This completes my 23rd year of teaching.
